Clear and consistent communication

With all that’s going on in the world, I think there’s one thing that we can all agree on … we really love clear, consistent communication.

In my conversations with fellow parents throughout the Bangor School District, I have found that one common issue is a sense of feeling left out of the loop. I can no longer count the number of times I have mentioned an event to parents only to be met with looks of surprise and fielding the question “where did you find out about that?!”

This is where my skills as a communication professional come into play. Did you know that, on average, it takes a minimum (yes minimum) of three communication “touches” for a message to stick? This means that for every single notice, event, etc., most folks need to hear the message, see the message, and then have that message repeated at least once more before it will take hold. In all likelihood, given the number of messages we are receiving today, it’s twice that.

While we have some great systems in place to facilitate communication from school administrators to the community, I definitely see opportunities for improvement. As a member of the Bangor School Committee, I look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure key messages are being delivered in a clear and timely manner.
