While I know that not everyone had the luxury of a long weekend, I hope that those of you who did were able to enjoy it. Shoutout to everyone who did have to work – I see you and thank you for your time.
After a busy first week of school, our family took some time for rest, but we also got out for a bit of community service work. As an active outdoor enthusiast, it’s important to me that we chip in to take care of the resources available to us, so we joined the Friends of the Lower Kenduskeag Stream (FOLKS) for a morning of trail maintenance. Armed with gloves, trash bags, trash picking tools, and lots of positive energy, we worked to clean things up a bit. It was great to see such a diverse group of people come together for this event and it got me thinking … wouldn’t it be great if the students in the Bangor schools had more opportunities to engage in service learning projects?
I was lucky to have these kinds of actives built into my high school curriculum, but I know that’s not the case for all. Providing opportunities for service learning projects is a great way to help students cultivate a greater sense of connection to the community, build confidence, develop a stronger sense of purpose, and these activities can easily be tied into academic learning goals.
It’s endeavors like these that really spark my interest and, as a member of the Bangor School Committee, I would actively seek out ways to bring such projects to life.
